Josh Kraft Statement on District 7 City Council Seat Left Hanging by Lack of Timely Special Election
BOSTON, MA – The following statement is from Josh Kraft regarding the push by City Councilors to bypass the special election for District 7 seat opened up by Tania Fernandes Anderson’s decision to resign.
“District 7 deserves to exercise their right to elect their next representative in the City Council, and leaving the seat vacant is just another example of how this community – the largest Black community in Boston – continues to face underrepresentation and economic challenges. Mayor Wu has been silent on this, but needs to answer some questions about a flagrant double standard, which is defined as a rule or principle which is unfairly applied in different ways to different people or groups. So what’s good for Beacon Hill isn’t good for Fort Hill?”
Additional background :
Two years ago, when the District 8 seat representing Beacon Hill and Back Bay opened up, the City Council chose to proceed with a special election when Kenzie Bok, a former political fundraiser for Mayor Wu, departed to work for her. Sharon Durkan was tapped to serve out the remainder of Bok’s term after winning a special election three months later in July 2023. Yesterday, two Councilors filed a home rule petition to leave the seat vacant after Fernandes Anderson resigns and wait until the November election to fill the seat.
