Josh Kraft Statement on Mayor Wu’s Housing Announcement
“Under Mayor Wu, Boston is at the very bottom of cities in the country in the production of new housing. In her three years, her unfulfilled promises and impractical policies have caused rents to surge 20% and housing production drop by 60%. While other major cities around the country are building and housing costs are going down, new production in Boston has ground to a halt.
In fact, production is down 50% in Boston since 2022, and the number of building permits pulled in November and December was a paltry 95. As a result, housing in Boston has never been more expensive with the median price of a home at $900,000 and rents are at an all-time high. In addition, the lack of housing construction is costing jobs and much needed tax revenue.
Josh has a plan to jump start the creation of new housing that average people can afford, and a rent control program that will provide real relief for renters and works for building owners. Just like her recent moves on bike lanes, the Mayor’s announcement is a direct reaction to Josh’s candidacy. After three years of not listening and no new housing production, Mayor Wu is now trying to cover up her exceptionally bad record on housing.”
